COMING TOGETHER, COMING APART
, by Daniel Gordis
Come to enjoy a discussion, led by Rabbi Rank, of the Gordis family’s move to Israel.  Thursday, Nov 20. The cost of the book is $18

…And then Cantor Bensimhon will present a BIBLIO-DRAMA about the book after services on Friday, Nov 14.  A biblio-drama is an inter-active play where the audience gets to comment and question the characters as the story unfolds. Very unusual and interesting!  Contact Claire Dressman at

Tuesday evenings, 7:30—9:30PM
Course dates: Nov. 11, 18, 25, Dec 2,9,16
Rabbi Cara Rosenthal will be discussing and teaching Theodicy: The Good, The Bad and The Faithful. The philosophical field of “Theodicy” (justifying God) attempts to explain how God allows so much evil in the world even though He is considered a benevolent Deity. The course examines the philosophy of Maimonides, Spinoza, Kaplan, Schulweiss, Berkovitz, and others. Biblical texts will be reviewed to establish an understanding of how our earliest ancestors grappled with God’s nature and how the Rabbi’s of the Talmudic era resolved the question of theodicy.

David Grumer leads a discussion of Daniel Deronda Published in 1876, this novel tells the story of Daniel Deronda, who discovers as an adult that he is Jewish, and not the illegitimate son of an English nobelman. George Eliot, the author, a supporter of Zionism presents a sympathetic view of Jews and Judaism (unusual for the times) and satirizes English society. A bagel breakfast and a peek into the 18th century! You do not have to have read the book.
