THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE Last day for donations is Sunday, November 23, 2008 As Thanksgiving approaches, we are once again calling upon our Midway Families to share their good fortune with neighbors in need. The homeless and indigent families of the New York Interdisciplinary School (NIS) once again need our help. For the past few years our Midway Families have donated food and turkeys enabling NIS families to enjoy a holiday meal.

Dr. Kenneth W. Stein is the William E. Schatten Professor of Contemporary Middle Eastern History, Political Science and Israeli Studies, at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. You might recall Dr. Stein as a Middle East Fellow at the Carter Center until the publication of the former president’s book, Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid, after whichhe resigned very publicly in protest against the book’s multiple errors, omissions and historical inaccuracies.

J Learn REFUEL, RECHARGE, RECONNECT WITH J LEARN J Learn: Long Island’s premier adult Jewish learning experience Temple Chaverim, 1050 Washington Ave., Plainview Fall 2008: Tuesday evenings, 7:30—9:30PM Course dates: Nov. 11, 18, 25, Dec 2,9,16 Rabbi Cara Rosenthal will be discussing and teaching Theodicy: The Good, The Bad and The Faithful. The philosophical field of “Theodicy” (justifying God) attempts to explain how God allows so much evil in the world even though He is considered a benevolent Deity. The course examines the philosophy of Maimonides, Spinoza, Kaplan, Schulweiss, Berkovitz, and others. Biblical texts will be reviewed to establish an understanding of how our earliest ancestors grappled with God’s nature and how the Rabbi’s of the Talmudic era resolved the question of theodicy. The Bronx – Borscht Belt THE BRONX GOES BORSCHT BELT Bronx Borough President invites former and current Jewish Bronx residents to submit stories/pictures of their memories of summers in the Catskill Mts, bungalow colonies, or Jewish resorts from 1940s to 1960s. Five resident’s stories will be used to create a special exhibit for display as part of the Bronx’s Annual Hanukkah Celebration on Monday, December 22 in Veterans Memorial Hall at the Bronx County Courthouse. BOOK OF THE EVERY OTHER MONTH CLUB Sunday, November 23 at10 AM David Grumer leads a discussion of Daniel Deronda Published in 1876, this novel tells the story of Daniel Deronda, who discovers as an adult that he is Jewish, and not the illegitimate son of an English nobelman. George Eliot, the author, a supporter of Zionism presents a sympathetic view of Jews and Judaism (unusual for the times) and satirizes English society. A bagel breakfast and a peek into the 18th century! You do not have to have read the book.

Parents Association Mah Jongg Cards ORDER YOUR MAH JONGG CARDS FROM MIDWAY The Parent Association is raising money fro Midway by selling Mah Jongg cards for 2009. You do not need to be an MJC member to order cards. Standard-size cards are $7 and large-print cards are $8. Bar / Bat Mitzvah Projects
JAMIE ZAFFOS Sending stuffed Animals to Israel Please donate new or gently used stuffed animals and teddy bears to benefit children in Israeli hospitals in need of cheering up. In co-ordination with Bears from Bergenfield.org, all donations will be sent to children in Israel. SOPHIE LEWIS Helping Animals Please donate supplies for the Little Shelter in Huntington, an animal shelter. You can put all items in the drop box located next to the Hebrew school office.
