With just 15 hours of training, you can change people's lives by teach them to read or improving their reading, writing and speaking skills.   Midway's first Literacy Nassau classes, held last spring, produced 20 graduates who already are out in the community doing this important and rewarding work.  Our second session will begin October 27 and run from
6:30 to 9:30 on five consecutive Monday nights.

Thanks to a UJA grant for this program, there is no charge for Midway members.

ATTENTION ALL SHOFAR BLOWERS

The Hebrew month of Elul is the month that brings us up to the High Holidays.  Traditionally, we sound the Shofar at the conclusion of each morning Minyan during the month.  This year, Elul corresponds to the month of September and we will need people to sound the Shofar every morning except Shabbat from September 2 through 28.  Morning Minyan is at 6:30 am Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; 6:15 am Monday and Thursday; and 9:00 am on Sundays.  Our Ba'al Tekiah, Michael Salzman, will be coordinating this to make sure that we have someone available each morning.
Interested?  Please contact Michael at:Salztuba@optonline.net.
All you need is a Shofar and a knowledge of the three basic Shofar blasts.  Michael is even offering coaching sessions if you need to brush up your skills a bit.  Please help us usher in the High Holiday season in this very special way.

Also:  We need as many Ba'alei Tekiah (Shofar blowers) as possible to make this year's Yom Kippur Tekiah Gedolah the most Gedolah ever.  We will be having a short rehearsal/meeting on Sunday, October 5, at 7:15-8:00 PM.  Please mark your calendars.  If you are unable to attend but still want to join us to help conclude the Yom Kippur services, contact Michael at:Salztuba@optonline.net.

THE ETHICS OF JEWISH LIVING
(Fall session, beginning September 16)

Instructor:
Rabbi Andrew Warmflash of Hewlett-East Rockaway Jewish Center
What does Judaism say about issues such as justice, life and death, interpersonal relationships, sexuality, community, business and medical ethics?

THE DRAMAS OF JEWISH LIVING
(Spring session, beginning February 1)

Instructor:
Rabbi Jonathan Hecht of Temple Chaverim

Egypt, the Maccabean Revolt, the Enlightenment, etc.—that still raise important questions for Jews today.

SHIVIM PANIM—70 FACES
Instructor:
Rabbi Marvin Richardson of Jericho Jewish Center
Jewish tradition suggests that the Torah has “shivim panim” (literally: 70 faces) or ways of interpreting and understanding it.  This course features stories of war and peace, family feuds, battles of revenge and power and passion, all taken from the book of Genesis.
