ATTENTION ALL BA'ALEI TEKIAH (SHOFAR BLOWERS)... MIDWAY NEEDS YOU!
In preparation for the High Holidays, we will sound the Shofar every morning during the Month of Elul (except on Shabbat). We begin on August 12th and continue right up to Rosh Hashanah.
On the two days of Rosh Hashanah, Midway will conduct 17 separate services, all of which require someone to sound the shofar. Also, we want everyone who can sound a shofar to join us as we bring Yom Kippur to a close with a grand Tekiah Gedolah.
To accomplish all of this we need a lot of shofar blowers. Are you game? All ages are welcome. All you need is your own shofar and be able to sound the three standard shofar calls: Tekiah, Shevarim and Teruah.
Need help? No problem. Our principal Ba'al Tekiah, Michael Salzman, is happy to help. Michael will be coordinating all of the shofar blowing from Elul through Yom Kippur. All interested Shofar Blowers should contact Michael Salzman at: Salztuba@optonline.net

ISRAEL TRIP – VOLUNTEERS FOR ISRAEL October 21, 2010 through November 4, 2010
The group is going to Israel as Volunteers for Israel. We will work on an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) base doing whatever it is that the IDF wants us to do.
The basic trip will be for two workweeks. We will leave on Thursday, October 21 and report to the IDF at 8:00 AM on Sunday, October 24. Each workweek runs from Sunday morning until Thursday afternoon during which time we will live in an IDF barracks, take meals in an IDF mess hall, and work at an IDF base. From Thursday evening until Sunday morning we'll be on our own and can either do things as a group or strike out as individuals. Our service to Israel will end the Thursday afternoon of November 4. After that you can come home or do whatever else you'd like to do.
We will pay for all of our expenses except while on an IDF base. On the base, we trade our work and sweat for room and board. Things to note: We are not volunteering to serve in or swear allegiance to the IDF. We will be working only in non-combative maintenance and supply roles. You will be issued fatigues that must be worn while on the base. You must be physically fit and will need medical clearance. An IDF base is not handicapped accessible. Check out the VFI program at www.VFI-USA.org

KIDS AWAY FROM HOME, SHOULDN'T BE AWAY FROM JUDAISM!
Your kids are our kids and we want to stay in touch with them as they journey through college. Wherever your college kids are, Rabbi Rank wants to send them a few messages during the year and a gift now and then. But he can't send anything without a proper address.
Postal regulations require complete addresses including apartment number and zip code. Even if you have already filled out a form in previous years, please fill it out again. Forms can be obtained in the Temple Office.
The kids move and we need to keep current with their new addresses. Graduate school students count, too. Please return the completed form as soon as possible. Let's keep our kids connected with the Jewish community.

SOCIAL ACTION NEWS
Contact Linda Weiss at LindaW418@awa-llc.com or call 933-8531 for more information on any program below:
HEKHSHER TZEDEK In this coming year, our seal, Magen Tzedek, will allow American Jews to purchase kosher food that has been produced in a manner that is consistent with the values of Torah. All consumers will be able to select a product with a Magen Tzedek seal which will be located next to the U or K kosher symbol, as a way of expressing their commitment to Jewish law, which is concerned with ritual behavior AND ethics. We would like to make sure that there are humane conditions in the kosher meat industry and that workers are treated fairly and with respect. Magen Tzedek is assuming an important position in the broad social movement of ethical eating.

FEGS TOILETRY DRIVE (help families in need) The Social Action Toiletry Box is located down stairs in the hall way of the Hebrew School. We are collecting toiletries for people who are less fortunate than us. Please donate the following items: hand and body soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, hairbrush and comb, shampoo, conditioners, tweezers, cotton balls, disposable shavers, first aid items, nail files, hair clips, q-tips, make up and lotions. If you go on vacation, remember to save the small shampoos, conditioners and soaps from the hotels for our toiletry drive. Thank you Rita Goldman for your help in delivering the toiletries to Fegs!
WE CARE BLANKETS A big thank you to Elly Rosen, Anita Spandorf and Lucy Simon for making beautiful blankets for children undergoing chemo therapy. You did an outstanding job! All the blankets will be wrapped in cellophane with colorful ribbons and brought to the children's wards in hospitals. Then they will be given to the children. The families greatly appreciate all your hard work and care! The blankets will help to keep the children warm while undergoing their chemo therapy and they will take them home with them .

UPCOMING B'NEI MITZVAH
My name is Sarah Fell. For my Bat Mitzvah Project, I am donating my time to Variety Children Learning Center in Syosset. Most Sundays I volunteer my time and work with Children who have Autism. These children are becoming very special to me. I love reaching out to them and I love how they reach out to me. This experience is incredibly rewarding for me. I am eager to help Fund Raise for this worthy organization. Variety is a place that promotes the development of children with learning, language and behavior challenges, including autism.
My fundraising efforts are two-fold. First, I am hoping you will donate your unwanted DVDs that your children have outgrown. A box will be set up at Midway for this collection. Secondly, I am selling Tie-Dyed Live Strong Bracelets that say: “GIVE KIDS A CHANCE”. And the back of the bracelets say “VARIETY”. They are $1 each. I hope you will support me in my endeavor to support Variety and all the Children that go there. SARAH’S BAT MITZVAH IS ON OCTOBER 9, 2010. MAZAL TOV |
