Shemini Atzeret occurs on the eighth day following Sukkot. The rabbis regard it as a holiday in its own right, separate and apart from Sukkot. The lulav and etrog are not used nor is there any requirement “to dwell” in the sukkah, though kiddush is generally recited in the sukkah. The Torah offers little commentary about Shemini Atzeret. The Torah’s silence unleashed the rabbis’ creativity in interpretation. Some said the holiday served to emphasize the special bond between Israel and God. Others saw it as a way to retain (“atzeret” means stop or pause) the sanctity derived from the first seven days of Sukkot and spread it throughout our lives. Whatever the reason, it seems appropriate to conclude Sukkot in some formal, ceremonial manner.

The service to recall loved ones who have passed on. they shall not be forgotten even during a period of great happiness.

WE PUT THE OHM INTO SHALOM! Scientific research has verified repeatedly the positive effects of turning down the body for a few minutes each day. Meditation lowers heart rate, reduces blood pressure, eases tension, and clears the mind. This class is open to everyone and you don’t even have to be Jewish. But our mantras always are, and are chosen based on the season and the Torah readings. Come do yourself a tovah (a good thing) and treat yourself to a few minutes of inspiration and relaxation. It will make the rest of the day so much better!

weekly pre-toddler class

for those caring for a parent, spouse, sibling, or child

The Daf Shevu’i class has been meeting for a few years and is wide-open to new members. We do one page of Talmud a week. Sound slow? Only to those who may have never opened a page of Talmud. The page or daf is pretty dense. We are studying Sanhedrin or the laws that governed that great body of scholars who handled the legal cases of the Jewish people through the second Temple period. What were their court procedures, how did they go about executing the condemned, who was eligible for the world-to-come and who was not, etc.? These are fascinating subjects that will undoubtedly inspire much conversation.

Kabbalat Shabbat

We recite the last service of Shabbat (Minhah), the first service of the first day of the week (Ma'ariv), and bid Shabbat farewell with wishes that the learning and energy we gained through Shabbat make the upcoming week productive, creative and fulfilling.
